AmeriCares is an international disaster relief and humanitarian aid organization that provides immediate response to emergency medical needs and supports long-term humanitarian assistance programs around the world. As part of a global collaboration with the ICA Foundation, AmeriCares and its partner, American Medical Overseas Relief (AMOR), work together to operate the Afshar Hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan. Since program initiation, 750 LNG IUS units have been incorporated into existing family planning services via AmeriCares. A primary focus of Afshar Hospital is maternal and child care. The maternity department is staffed with three additional OB-GYN specialists, midwives and nurses. Each month this team delivers between 130 and 150 babies and provides pre- and post-operative care to approximately 20 C-Section patients. They also provide education to the new mothers on nutrition, breast feeding, family planning, birth spacing, and various other health topics.
